SUSTAINABILITY & COMMUNITY2018-09-21T03:42:01+00:00

COMMUNITY.  ENVIRONMENT.  ECONOMY.

Creating a sustainable development for the future. Building opportunities and giving back to the local community.

OUR COMMITMENT

At Selong Selo, we’re passionate about sustainability, and we demonstrate a commitment to sustainability principles in both our internal operations and in our engagement with local communities and the natural environment. Our commitment is reflected in every decision we make, and is equally important to us as creating a quality development.

We understand that the road to sustainability is an ongoing one, and we are continually learning and adapting our business practices. We hope we can illustrate techniques that can be adopted by peer developments in the region to demonstrate that sustainability programs not only make g ood social and environmental sense, but that they also make good financial sense.

Guiding our work on sustainability is the Selo Footprints Strategy 2018. At the end of this year we will report our progress against the strategy and develop key goals for 2019.

CORE PRINCIPLES & ACTIONS

The Selo Footprints Strategy 2018 is guided by the following principles and core values

Principle 1: Value our employees and suppliers

ACTIONS:

We understand that a vibrant workplace culture is critical to the success of our development. We extend this understanding to our employees, contractors suppliers and are committed to positive internal social outcomes.

Selong Selo is an equal opportunity employer, and we encourage the development of employee skills and careers through a number of on-the-job opportunities. 80 per cent of our current employees are residents of communities close to Selong Selo – many came to us with minimal or no formal training and have excelled in the workplace.

To demonstrate our appreciation of our employees’ achievements, dedication and work ethic, we run an internal recognition program that links directly to living our core values. To further our appreciation, and to encourage the participation of our employees in the development of their communities, we support our staff to take part in important local voluntary projects, such as our coordinated aid efforts for victims of natural disasters.

We are constantly training, upskilling and mentoring the local labour force, creating opportunities for further career progression and advancement. Included in this process is a monthly award program presented to those daily workers who adhere to and live our values on occupational health and safety.

Our suppliers are also important to our success. Wherever possible we work with local businesses to ensure that we contribute to growing the local economy. For example, our sunset cruise and fishing activities are run by local fishermen who reside by Selong Belanak beach.

We value our employees and give encouragement to those who uphold our company’s core values and show commitment to their work.

Principle 2: Support our community

ACTIONS:

Selong Selo is operating in a remote location with an informal economy and limited industry. We are proud to be creating sustainable jobs for the community to stimulate growth and improve rural livelihoods in Selong Belanak.

To give back to our community, we have established a corporate giving program that encourages staff to contribute financially or in-kind. We believe that the effects of giving back flow on to create healthy relationships and community resilience. Our corporate giving program runs continuously and is boosted with additional giving to assist with disaster relief efforts.

To extend our giving back efforts to include our owners and guests, we run the program Pack for a Purpose which promotes and facilitates the collection and donation of quality goods to identified individuals, groups, institutions and communities.

Principle 3: Commit to sustainable operations

ACTIONS:

To us as a company, success is operating as a viable business while contributing to the protection and preservation of the natural environment. We have implemented a number of initiatives that we see as critical in the current climate, such as the complete elimination of single-use plastics, not supplying plastic water bottles, and sourcing 95 per cent of our consumables from within Indonesia.

To address issues of waste production and widespread pollution, Selong Selo has established a zero-waste management system and on-site recycling plant, an on-site nursery to supply our landscaping needs, and commenced a permaculture garden to supply our restaurant.

Our zero-waste management systems allows us to process all of our organic and non-organic waste on-site, and we are confident that none of our waste will end up in waterways, oceans or landfill. Our on-site nursery allows us to work with local ecological knowledge to propagate and raise our own plants and trees for landscaping – this ensures understanding of natural systems and endemic species, while minimising environmental risks and transport costs.

The permaculture garden is being set up to reduce waste production and emissions from transporting produce, and to combat unsustainable farming practices. Through our Produce to Plate initiative, we can be confident that our guests are enjoying good organic food made from quality ingredients.

Principle 4: Lead as a changemaker

ACTIONS:

At Selong Selo, we believe in peer-to-peer learning as being vital to understanding how each of us can improve our relationship with the natural environment. Many people, organisations and businesses are aware of current environmental issues, but may not know what they can do to positively contribute.

We see Selong Selo as having a responsibility to lead as a changemaker, and through our educational tours for staff, guests, investors and owners to our zero-waste management site, nursery, and permaculture garden, we are improving awareness on small behavioural changes each of us can make in our daily lives.

We also raise awareness with our employees about the issues linked to single-use plastics and other destructive consumption practices such as buying plastic bottled water, and we communicate openly with our owners and investors about environmentally-friendly initiatives we implement in our development.

We believe in always educating and leading by example. Our beach cleanup initiatives allowed us to engage with our staff and the local community on the subject of single-use plastic waste and the importance of clean waterways.

Principle 5: Support natural systems

ACTIONS:

As we continue on the journey towards sustainability, we recognize that Selong Selo is responsible to the natural systems linked to where and how we operate. Our first priority is to the Selong Belanak area, and we are able to support community-driven initiatives through our membership with the Selong Belanak Community Association (SBCA).

Working with SBCA, we have extended the use of our zero-waste management system to the local community to ensure that no waste produced in Selong Belanak by participating SBCA members will end up in oceans, waterways, or landfill. We sponsor bins that are accessible by the public for disposing of waste and participate in public clean-ups, supporting SBCA to keep the local environment clean.

Selong Selo also engages with the University of Mataram as we build our knowledge and understanding of locally-driven research, projects and other efforts that seek to promote effective waste-management, agroforestry, reforestation, and the protection of marine ecosystems.

Our commitment to keep Lombok pristine extends through all aspects of our day-to-day business and is a fundamental core value of our company.
